Whisked Away to Another Era

Buildings Alive! Ybor City Architecture Tour, March 6, 2014

I was already stoked about the upcoming Buildings Alive! Ybor City Architecture Tour, then I had an exciting chat with Ybor City Museum Society curator, Elizabeth “Liz” McCoy last week and was over-the-moon with anticipation!  Liz exuded such passion as she talked about The Ybor City Museum Society and the upcoming historical tour, Thursday March 6th, in its third year running.

This amazing tour features nine historical buildings dating back to the late 1800s/early 1900s and is located in Historic Ybor City. Liz explained this tour is an opportunity for attendees to discover the area’s flavorful past and to revel in its historical elegance, restored to beautiful grace for today’s modern uses.

Attendees sneak an insiders’ peek into privately-owned architectural treasures that have been lovingly rehabilitated, restored and preserved.  Hop onto one of the three Jolley Trolleys to be whisked away to another era, learning about the people and history that built, worked, and lived here.

Each structure on the trolley stop provides food, beverages, and detailed tours regaling the buildings’ colorful past. If you prefer walking to each stop, volunteers will be staffed along the sidewalks to guide you to your next rendezvous point, which I’m eternally grateful so that I don’t go wayward.

During the evenings’ adventure, be sure to participate in the scavenger hunt to win fun prizes at night’s end. The evening culminates in the Ybor City Museum State Park garden with an After Party including live entertainment, desserts, drinks, and prize awards.

As we wound down our incredible conversation, I posed one final question to Liz. What one thing did she hope guests walked away with after participating? She heartily replied “The sense of history that’s here.” I truly believe her hopes will be greatly exceeded as attendees are swept back into a vibrant past. And personally, I’ll have my Kodak EasyShare ready to point-and-shoot so that I can take some of that history home with me.

Register today! Architectural tours run from 5pm – 9pm with trolleys coursing on a continuous loop. The After Party extends from 8pm – 10pm. Tickets are available for $45 online at YborMuseum.org/BuildingsAlive or at either of the two registration points that night.

This tour is organized and hosted annually by The Ybor City Museum Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  If you are interested in sponsoring Buildings Alive! in the future, or any other upcoming Ybor City Museum Society events call (813) 247-1434.

A personal thank you to both Chantal Ruilova Hevia, President & CEO and Elizabeth McCoy, Curator at the Ybor City Museum Society for their time, information, and for all they do for the Ybor City and Tampa Bay communities through these philanthropic events!
